On December 10, 2007, the LOPSA board authorized the Technical Services Committee (TSC) to commence migrating IRC services from Cog/ByxNet to Freenode.
The scheduled date for this move is January 31, 2008, beginning at 11:00am EST.
About the Migration
The Freenode IRC network is slightly different than where we've been housed in the past, and therefore some of your IRC client configurations may need to be changed. After migration, things should function much like you are used to on the current network. We have written these directions to handle most scenarios and have provided links to the excellent documentation already provided by the Freenode admin team.
LOPSA has designated several IRC liasons to assist members with the migration and their overall LOPSA IRC experience. The current liasons are jtrucks, marius_, Teknix, and HCoyote, and they can be found in #lopsa or contacted via private message on both IRC networks. Please feel free to get their attention if you require assistance or have questions that are not addressed in these directions or the Freenode documentation.
Basic Instructions
- Connect to irc.lopsa.org with your IRC client. When making the initial connection, you may need to temporarily change your IRC nickname to something else due to a pre-existing nickname registration. For more information on accessing the network, please visit http://freenode.net/using_the_network.shtml
- Prior to the switch on January 31, you can connect to Freenode using irc.freenode.net, as the DNS change for irc.lopsa.org will happen at the time listed above.
- After connecting, you will need to register your nickname. Visit http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#userregistration for more information.
- In some cases, your nickname may already be registered. To determine this, type /msg nickserv info . If the nickname in question has not been used in the last 60 days, it may be possible to have the registration dropped and re-registered to you. This can be accomplished by joining #freenode and asking for assistance with a nickname expiration. You may need to wait around on this channel for a little while before a Freenode IRCop can help.
- Make sure that you authenticate with nickserv upon each sign-on to ensure your nickname remains yours. You will also need to be authenticated in order to send private messages to others on the network. The manual way to do this is by typing /msg nickserv identify , but some IRC clients allow this to be automated. Visit http://freenode.net/policy.shtml#usernames for more information about nickname registration, and http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#identify for help with automated authentication to nickserv.
- Join #lopsa
- Remember, if you need further assistance, please ask one of the LOPSA IRC liasons. They will be available on both IRC networks during the migration.
- Please note that #lopsa is a public channel for a professional organization. LOPSA members often work in difficult jobs and we understand the need for everyone to occasionally vent some steam, but we also want to make a positive impression on any potential new members and still provide a valuable community resource.
- Unlike the old #lopsa, channel ops will not be necessary or handed out by default as the overall network is substantially larger. If you are a channel regular and would like to help take on channel management responsibilities, please message one of the IRC liasons to discuss it further.
- Topics will still be editable by anyone, even those without ops.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during the migration.
