1. LOPSA names Deepa Solanki new Executive Director
Deepa Solanki, who has long served LOPSA as Assistant Executive
Director, was recently promoted by Association Headquarters to the
Executive Director level. As part of that switch, the Board is pleased
to announce that we have named Deepa the Executive Director of LOPSA.
She's been the force keeping LOPSA running and organized for some time
now, and we're thrilled to have her in this newly enhanced role.
Sam Albrecht, our previous Executive Director, isn't going away; he's
been named Executive VP of LOPSA, a senior advisory role, so we can
continue to draw on his experience as the founding Executive Director of
LOPSA. He is also now tasked with managing the relationship between
LOPSA and Association Headquarters.
2. Sam Albrecht named Founding Member
Sam Albrecht, as part of stepping down as Executive Director, was
recognized by Board vote as a Founding Member. Sam's job was to be our
Executive Director for the last two years, but his leadership, expertise,
commitment and dedication to the launch of LOPSA went far beyond a job.
In recognition of that, the Board agreed unanimously that Sam is in
every way a Founder of LOPSA, and has voted to grant him honorary
membership together with Founding status.
3. LOPSA offering training workshops at SCALE
LOPSA is proud to announce a partnership with SCALE, the Southern
California Linux Expo, that will bring LOPSA trainers on-site to provide
professional training the first day of the Expo, Friday, February 8th.
LOPSA will be offering two classes. Austin Godber, Platform Engineer for
JumpBox, a vendor of virtual server appliances, will offer a class on
Virtualization, and Chris St. Pierre, Unix System Administrator at
Nebraska Wesleyan University and a frequent instructor for LOPSA, will
teach about fighting spam with open source tools.
Additionally, several LOPSA members will be presenting at the technical
speaker sessions the second day of the Expo, including Luke Kanies,
author of Puppet, and Esther "Moose" Filderman, longtime AFS
administrator and evangelist for the OpenAFS project. LOPSA will also
have a presence at the vendor exhibition.
Registration for the tutorials is $300 for the full day. Included in the
price of the classes is a SCALE 6x Full Access Pass, a $70 value.
SCALE's website is at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/.
This program builds on LOPSA's success at the Ohio Linux Fest in
September. We're working with existing conferences and communities to
deliver professional training to people who otherwise might not have
access to it.
If you have any questions, please let us know!
4. LOPSA Accorded official 501(c)(3) Status!
In case you missed our mailing over the holiday season, LOPSA's
application for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS has been
successful. This status recognizes LOPSA's commitment to serve society
as a whole in its pursuit to educate sysadmins and serve our profession
as a whole.
Many thanks to LOPSA Executive Vice President Sam Albrecht, whose
tireless efforts in the face of extraordinary adversity -- we're neither
joking nor exaggerating -- lead to our application's approval.
501(c)(3) status also makes donations and sponsorship contributions to
LOPSA tax-deductible, possibly including contributions made in previous
tax years. Please consult with your tax professionals for further
information on how 501(c)(3) status affects you.
If you are interested in sponsoring LOPSA or know an individual or
organization that might be, please send email to the Board.
