1. New Committees
As the new Board gets going, we'd like to cast a wider net for involving
more volunteers with hopefully fewer hours coming from each person. An
ideal group would engage every member a little bit, developing all LOPSA
members as professionals as well as making LOPSA itself more valuable to
the profession.
To that end, we're looking at turning our committees from Board-driven
one-person efforts into real full committees. Right now, our working
list includes:
Technical Services
Conferences
Locals
Content Services
Training Workshops
and some other ideas. We'd like to include folks as much as possible.
Involvement can be flexible, and will involve an occasional conference call
or meeting, together with tasks that the committee comes up with itself.
If you have ideas for a committee, want to be involved but are unsure as
to how, or would like to know more about LOPSA efforts and committees,
send email to the Board at board@lopsa.org.
2. LOPSA Web Redesign
LOPSA is about to embark on a project to clean the design and the
implementation of our Drupal-powered website. Among other goals
would be a nicer interface, better ease of use and organization,
better ability for member interactions, backend software upgrades,
and more.
We'd like to involve a project manager type, some techie types and
some design types in this process. If you're interested in joining
the Web Redesign Team, please send email to palmer@lopsa.org. We'd
especially like to involve anyone who has a lot of experience with
Drupal 5.x, but will take any folks willing to learn!
3. Call for Volunteers: Content Committee
The LOPSA Content Committee is responsible for publications and content
for all LOPSA projects. Content would include the content on the
website, as well as any print materials we might produce.
We're looking for non-Board volunteers to join (and lead!) the Content
Committee. The job of the committee is to drive the website; set the
tone, find writers, write material themselves, and generally take
charge and responsibility for an active, member focused website. We'd
have a once monthly conference call meeting, together with whatever
tasks each member of the committee volunteers for.
You would have a Board liaison, but the Board member on the committee
would not be the Chair or the main driver of the effort.
LOPSA, as I just mentioned a few paragraphs above, is about to redesign
and rebuild the website; the current site was launched very quickly,
and it's showing age. Naturally, the Content Committee would be front
and center in that effort. After that, we simply want more focus on
bringing the words and thoughts of our members to our members; most of
the rest will be left to the Committee.
If you'd like to help, or just want to learn more, please send email to
Chris Palmer at palmer@lopsa.org.
4. Upcoming event: LOPSA at the Ohio Linux Festival
September 28th through September 30, LOPSA will be a major participant in
the 2007 Ohio LinuxFest (OLF) at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in
Columbus, Ohio. LOPSA members will be providing professional level
training on Friday, September 28th through the OLF University. On Saturday,
LOPSA will host a booth in the community exhibit hall. LOPSA is also proud
to sponsor Jon 'maddog' Hall as a featured speaker at OLF.
Ohio LinuxFest is a free, grassroots conference for the Linux and Free/
Open Source Software community with guests and speakers from around the
world. This year marks the first multi-day event, including a Fark.com
party on Friday, keynote speeches by Max Spevack (Fedora Community
leader) and Bradley M. Kuhn (Software Freedom Law Center and Software
Freedom Conservancy).
