My friend typically come to me with their tech related questions and here is one I hear all the time and have never been able to quickly or easily explain to them what to look for so I thought I would share my personal feelings about what type of computer to get to everyone.
1. It is honestly a preference in some aspects. First of all I would decide what operating system you are most comfortable with. Windows XP/Vista?, Linux? or Mac OS X? By choosing your operating system preference we can narrow it down a little bit… just a little.
2. What do you plan on doing with the machine and what is your experience level? If you have never owned a computer before I would go with OS X and a Apple computer. Apple computers not only come with a very nice operating system but they can dual boot and run Windows on the same machine. You get the best of both worlds so to speak… but you pay for it. If you are comfortable with Windows and have no interest otherwise I would get a mid to high end pc. Again that is my preference! Get what you like/can afford/best suites you/etc.
3. If you are just an average user, as most people are, remember that all three major operating systems out there can go on the internet, check email, watch youtube videos, chat, etc. They also all have a version of Office available. This includes both a MS version for OS X and Windows users and OpenOffice, which is a open source alternative, that runs on all platforms.
I hope somebody somewhere finds my three very short answers helpful. Its a confusing world we live in when it comes to computers lately. Most importantly just remember to use what you feel happy with or what best suites you. If you still use DOS or FreeDOS because it is what you prefer.. well that is your choice isn’t it?
