14:00 and I'm your host today, welcome to LOPSA Live! Live from freenode#lopsa-live 14:01 * nonrandom hands pck a vowel 14:01 a little summary: 14:01 We have some up-coming events: 14:01 Sysadmin Appreciation Day 14:01 That's 2008, July 25 14:02 we usually have some activity there and it generates some visibility for us 14:02 .oO(no calendar entry?) 14:02 right now we are in the process of preparing this year's announcements and our links to the site 14:02 and are looking for volunteers for doing the revamp or even generating ideas for it 14:03 we're open to new ideas if anyone has suggestions 14:03 send to the board and we'll make sure it gets to the right place 14:03 Event: LUGradio 14:04 unfortunately, our part in that one was cancelled due to insufficient volunteers 14:05 I'm told there's TECHbash coming up 14:05 so here's LuftHans to give a little info 14:05 TECHbash is in US-NJ on the 10th of May 14:06 http://techbash.com/ 14:06 Title: TECHbash 2008 :: A FREE IT Professional and Developer Conference 14:06 LOPSA is working on having a booth at the event and has several members attending 14:06 oh, where is that? 14:06 Nanticoke, PA 14:07 near NJ. 14:07 :) 14:07 hmmmmmm. 14:07 oops, sorry, mixing up a couple of events 14:07 For various values of near ;) 14:07 * nonrandom wonders if Corzine and Rendell know their states have merged 14:07 anyway, we're working with the organizing group and hope to have an alliance worked out when they go live 14:08 we had a talk proposal, but it didn't work out 14:08 two more coming up are: 14:09 if you're interested in attending contact WindRider 14:09 YAPC and OLF: over to jtrucks for those 14:09 Thank you, pck 14:10 Yet Another Perl Conference:: North America (YAPC::NA) is in Chicago, IL, USA June 16 - 18, with a selection of two day classes on the 19th and 20th 14:10 LOPSA is arranging to have a booth at the event. 14:11 David Parter and I will be assisting with the booth and we are finalizing details on a class we will be giving. 14:11 Press releases to come next week, IIRC 14:12 Ohio Linux Festival (OLF) is planned for October 11, 2008, and it is held in Columbus, OH, USA. 14:12 LOPSA is working with the OLF staff for another OLF-U day of classes. 14:12 pck: back to you. 14:12 Thanks, jtrucks 14:13 As mentioned above in the beginning, there are always possible activities looking for volunteers 14:14 one of those that has come up was suggested by a member recently of trying to be a more visible repository of knowledge 14:14 this is a possibility that we're gauging interest in to consider official support: 14:15 with all of the various How-To places that are spread out and out-dated/etc, create a meta How-To for doing things like "How do I setup": DHCP, DNS, Email, Wikis, etc 14:16 i've been thinking about it like a learn2/wikibooks/howStuffWorks for things sysadmin... 14:16 and do all of original overviews, linking to existing vendor-specific, and new vendor/os-specific write-ups when needed 14:16 that's kind of a tall order. We'll need significant volunteerism to achieve that AND keep it up to date. 14:17 I probably didn't do the proposal justice, but if you think that micro summary might add value to the 'net for syadmins, drop us a line so we can know if there is sufficient volunteer support to have a chance at success 14:18 It'd be a very visible and tangible resource for the SA community, especially if it was edited and updated periodically 14:18 and you're right, for the write-ups, reviews, and on-going checking that they're still correct, that's a lot of volunteer effort 14:18 I think it would add a lot of value provided we can actually get content editors and volunteers 14:19 well, I understand what you're talking about ... I just think we'd make it more successful if we narrow the scope to what we know we can achieve in a phase 1 roll out. 14:19 SApedia 14:20 (oy, I sound like a manager.) 14:20 HCoyote: There is a reason why you're the TSC Chair :) 14:20 :-) 14:21 "By visualizing success, we will create system administration synergies ..." 14:21 HCoyote: you're point is well taken, but from long experience, you can't manage volunteers in the same way you manage employees, especially for creative tasks. you aren't paying them, so you can't demand they produce on your schedule--that tends to just push them away when "life intervenes" 14:22 for that reason, it seems to work better when you have a *broader* scope with shallower commitments--then people can dip in, do something find fun, and then deal with the rest of life. 14:22 TreyHarris: I think you and I are on the same page. 14:23 thanks for the comments 14:23 * HCoyote shuts up. 14:23 if you have more, I can hold off, I was just sensing a bit of silence 14:24 I'm done too, you sensed right. :) 14:24 In other news, we're working with three regional groups to form chapters 14:25 Northeast PA (Scranton area), NYC, and Indianapolis 14:25 in other news, we do not have the final bits in ink yet, but there are a few more proto-chapters in the wings 14:25 yeah, that 14:26 Plus we're revamping the chapter organization process to be more responsive 14:26 It's not perfect but it's getting better 14:26 thanks, arclight! 14:26 now we have a word from our President: TreyHarris 14:27 quick comment: somebody ought to take 1min and add the upcoming events to the upcoming events cal 14:27 thanks, philip 14:27 * pck nods to nonrandom and will get back to him on that 14:27 Since the beginning of the year the Board's been engaged in a strategic planning process 14:28 We entered it with a particular goal in mind: to commit the organization to achieving certain goals, publicly stated and with success clearly measurable, for 2008 14:28 We'll be publicizing that list in next month's Memo to members 14:29 I can tell you that we already have the commitments finalized on the "infrastructure" front, meaning things that are under-the-covers but critical to our success 14:29 What we're completing now is a question of what program-level commitments we can make 14:30 That's a harder question, because it goes into issues of priorities and resources and budget and how much volunteer time we can get and many other amorphous issues, hence it's taken longer. 14:31 But the Board is going on record with the set of things we are promising to complete this year, and there is a Board-level champion attached to each. 14:31 Aren't the reginal groups supposed to get a budget amount from LOPSA? 14:31 pck: Please take that question, I'll be right back. ("Life intervened". :) 14:32 actually, I'll have to defer that one to our regional champion 14:32 arclight: can you cover that topic? 14:33 The only reason I ask is it's listed as a Bene for each chapter on http://governance.lopsa.org/index.php/LOPSA_Policies/Locals_program#LOCAL_CHAPTER 14:33 Title: LOPSA Policies/Locals program - GovernanceWiki, http://tinyurl.com/6zdtvv 14:33 Yes, according to the current policy 14:33 LOPSA_NJ doesn't need any money right now but I thought I would bring it up 14:33 Everyone gets $1? :-) 14:33 I'm not sure we can commit to that and I want the board to review what we can realistically commit to 14:33 s/Everyone/Every group/ 14:34 And make sure the policy reflects reality 14:35 I'm still here 14:35 sorry about that, unexpected collateral damage 14:35 arclight: that's why I brought it so the board can take that line out of the policy 14:36 thanks, wbilancio: we've been trying to get that to match reality a bit more already 14:36 I have a revision on my desk that's slated for an upcoming board meeting; you've just fanned the fire to get it submitted soon 14:36 no prob... 14:36 I'm glad that we're on the same page :) 14:37 (And I'm back if there were any questions on my earlier comments.) 14:37 we just finished covering the question that came up 14:37 so if you have more to continue from where you were you have impeccable timing 14:38 I think the main thing is that we sort out what support we can realistically provide and make sure we set reasonable expectations; we can expand that with time, but for now we need to update our policy 14:38 I don't think so. I can enumerate the infrastructural commitments if people are really interested, but otherwise, I'm done. 14:39 Thanks, Trey 14:39 with that, the announcements/etc should be pretty much covered and we are almost to the open questions portion, but I have a quick query for you that are here: 14:40 I'm interested in the intrastructural commitments. :) 14:40 actually, I'll defer it to web/mail/other-IRC: is LOPSA Live! working for you 14:41 nonrandom: you would say that right after i closed the window with them, wouldn't you? :) 14:41 that's the Question of the Day from me, answer me later, privmsg/etc 14:41 pck: when it's early like this yea 14:41 with that, what questions and comments do we have for the board? 14:41 Um, Doug, aren't you on the Board? 14:41 asm2work: no. 14:42 Hrm. We'll have to fix that. 14:42 Doug gnawed his own leg off and escaped :) 14:42 * nonrandom grins 14:43 low turnout. 21 in #lopsa-live 14:43 well, the floor is currently open 14:44 nonrandom: the items are, in no particular order, direct-to-member communications, an "evangelist kit", a fiscal plan, a collaborative project management tool, increased chapter/local support, our standing commitments to Sysadmin Appreciation Day, our LISA presence, and website technical upgrades 14:45 the commitments themselves on each item are too verbose to list here. they'll be in the minutes and discussed in the memo to members next month 14:45 cool. sounds like an appropriate forum. 14:46 oh, did anybody fix the problem yet with last memo to members not being on the web page? (guess I could check that) 14:46 ah, no. (answered) 14:46 I'll take that on myself to check as well and make sure it gets put there if it is not there 14:48 we're here until 16:00 US/East for you to query us en masse and the floor is still open 14:48 mmm, in relation to earlier point about documenting sysadmin typical tasks (DNS howto etc), interesting/nice idea, though one need to be careful of, as I'm sure you're aware (nothing worse than having an outdated or overly sparse documentation area, could give wrong impression of lopsa). Though I think it's a good idea, and agree with HCoyote & Trey's comments - it may be an idea to have a week dedicated to DNS documenting for instance ( mail to discis 14:49 "...for instance ( mail to disci" chopped ofgfg 14:49 off, evern 14:49 At least then it may help get over the broad vs focussed gap - and could also then get lots (hopeflly) information/docs on one topic, and then do a mass review at end of week (or whatever time period) 14:49 ah 14:49 DNS documenting for instance ( mail to disciss@ asking people to go to http://wikipage & entering documentation/info/tid bits on DNS) 14:50 (that last line for the bit that was chopped off :) 14:51 seanos, speaking as the person who proposed the idea, and as the person who will probably be the editor of the thing, I'm going to say no to that. Well, not exactly "no"; let me explain . . . 14:51 My idea was to solicit authors to write articles, not have random people contribute to a wiki page. I'm thinking of this more as an online version of the SAGE Short Topics series. . . . 14:52 ahhh I see, sorry I misunderstood from above. 14:52 The articles will be reviewed by technically savvy people and published only if "approved." . . . 14:52 However, your point about keeping them up-to-date is a good one. 14:53 yes yes - get you now - excellent, much better idea. 14:53 sorry, I was afraid I'd not describe well enough, thanks for correcting, asm2work 14:53 np 14:54 The LOPSA Education Committee is looking for input from LOPSA members 14:54 Now, I will be asking for volunteers to write the articles in addition to maybe going and asking specific people I know to please write an article. \ 14:54 (I'm hoping for LDAP and Kerberos myself...) 14:54 asm2work: oops. I thought you were done, sorry. 14:56 * pck kinda likes the '\' and expects that indicates more still to come 14:56 * jtrucks == pck 14:56 Sorry, that was a typo. 14:56 LOL 14:56 heh 14:56 damn and we thought you were setting a useful standard. 14:56 afrid to commit? 14:56 :-) 14:56 over to jtrucks then 14:57 pck: thank you. 14:57 We are looking for members to suggest small (or large) conferences for us to participate in. 14:58 SNW 14:58 Nontraditional conferences, Windows OS conferences, OS X conferences... 14:59 Er, Storage Networking World 14:59 is the "media kit" being updated to make it easier to evangelize? 14:59 Lead time of several weeks is best, but several months notice is even better. 14:59 HCoyote: yes. 14:59 jtrucks: SNW is either happening now or has just ended -- plenty of time to plan for 2009. 15:00 if you contact the education committee, it's chair (LuftHans|FernHans) or find myself, dparter, WindRider, wbilancio or anyone else involved with the Edu Comittee online we can look into it. 15:00 asm2work: okay, thank you! 15:00 it's on our list to investigate now. 15:01 we want to have some presence in as many conferences as we can given time, budget, scheduling, and other realistic restraints. 15:01 even if it is a very small local or regional event, we want to hear about it. 15:01 we would love to have something non-Linux in 5 to 8 months 15:01 * jtrucks thanks pck and everyone for. 15:01 s/for/ 15:01 thanks, jtrucks 15:01 USENIX Annual Tech and Security both get at least some sysadmins; usually more at the former especially if there are good sysadmin tutorials. 15:01 ATC is Boston in June; not sure when Security is. 15:02 it's time to start winding up...I'll direct further suggestions to the nicks jtrucks mentioned 15:02 asm2work: thank you, sir! 15:02 * jtrucks nods to pck 15:03 so thank you all again. for anyone that wants to message me with comments suggestions, please use the nick: pckizer 15:03 thanks. 15:03 and that's it for this month's LOPSA Live! 15:04 see you all back in #lopsa, tech@, and again next month right here! 15:04 thanks pck! 15:05 pck has set the topic on channel #lopsa-live to LOPSA Live!
