I've started using Nagios Checker plugin for Firefox, which puts a little Nagios status indicator into the bottom right corner of your Firefox status bar. A green "no problem" if there is no problem, or an alert indicator if there are issues. You don't have to be in your Nagios window or look at it constantly to keep an eye on system status.
