1. A November Note from Ski

  Hello LOPSAnians!

As the attendees at the LOPSA Community meeting held at USENIX LISA '09
heard, we have finally put the legal troubles behind us and are again
focused on increasing our membership. As part of this, LOPSA would
like to find and reach out to other technical user groups and tell
them about LOPSA. We believe that, just as networking with peers is
important to individual system administrators, networking with other
groups helps to build a beneficial and tight-knit community.

If you know of any user groups in your area that might benefit from
knowing about us, please send us their contact information. As well,
if you are interested in starting a local LOPSA chapter or affiliate
group, please contact ski@lopsa.org. We're happy to help facilitate
  in any way we can.

  Thanks

  ski

  http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale8x/special-events/scale-u

LOPSA members Chris "Ski" Kacoroski, Chris St. Pierre, Jesse Trucks
and David Parter are again teaching for the benefit of LOPSA. The
SCALE University training program continues for SCALE 8X. It is
presented by LOPSA in partnership with SCALE. The classes give a more
intense and personal learning experience than a 45-minute seminar.

We are offering four half-day classes for system administrators of all
skill and experience levels. The SCaLE University Pass includes a full
day of training (two classes of your choice) and full access to all
three days of SCaLE. To register, select the "SCALE 8X Full Access
Pass" and then the "SCALE University Pass" which will include a $60
discount on your total charge. The SCALE University classes will be
held on Friday, February 19th. 2010.

3. New mailing list focused on small sites.

Ask and ye shall receive! LOPSA member Robert Au (myshkin) wanted a
place for discussing topics more specific to system administrators at
  small sites. From Robert:

The smallsites@lopsa.org mailing list is an open forum for
discussion of all topics related to system administration of
small sites. We define "small sites" rather loosely; small
numbers of users, servers, and admins all affect how we do our
jobs. Topics appropriate for this list include which large-site
tools scale down well for small sites, what soft skills help
manage expectations for customers and management, and how to
build the community of small-site admins. Please join the
    discussion!

If you would like to join the mailing list, you can go to our
mailman interface and sign up. The URL is:

    https://lopsa.org/mailman/listinfo/smallsites

If there's a mailing list that you would like to see LOPSA host
that is targeted at system administrators, please contact
  board@lopsa.org and let us know.

4. Luke S. Crawford wins 2009 Chuck Yerkes Award

The Chuck Yerkes Award is presented annually in recognition of
outstanding individual contributions in online forums over the
past year. It was created after Chuck Yerkes' untimely death in
2004 to memorialize the mentorship he provided countless system
administrators through his helpful and accurate posts to system
administration mailing lists. Each year, an awards committee
selects someone who followed Chuck's example in the prior year
in their contributions to system administration online forums—whether
mailing lists, web forums, or chat rooms.

The LOPSA awards committee presents the 2009 Chuck Yerkes Award
to Luke S. Crawford. Luke's writing has shown the patience,
insight, and helpfulness that we should all strive to emulate in
  providing mentorship online.

LOPSA is pleased to present this award and congratulates Luke on
  this recognition from the community.

Information about the Yerkes Award and past winners can be found
  on our website at:

5. Your Opinion Matters! LOPSA Membership Survey is coming.

In the next two weeks, LOPSA will be sending out a member needs
survey. Feedback from members and non-members is welcome, and
is essential for LOPSA to continue to provide key member services
as well as to raise awareness about the profession. Your insights
will also assist LOPSA's leadership in determining future initiatives
  for the organization.

Your opinion matters and we are listening! So please keep a look
out for your survey invitation, and let us know what you think.
In appreciation of your participation, all completed submissions
will be entered into a drawing for a free 8GB iPod Touch.

We look forward to hearing from you!

6. An apple a day ...

... may keep the doctor away, but sometimes that isn't enough.

LOPSA has partnered with Association Health Programs to give
members the opportunity to purchase and save on various insurance
programs including health, life, long term care, dental, vision,
  and more.

You can find more information about this recently added member
  benefit at:

    https://lopsa.org/health-insurance

7. Were you at USENIX LISA 2009?

Now that LISA '09 has come and gone, we can all settle in for a few
weeks of well deserved rest. If you were there and want to share
your good times, then upload your photos to the LOPSA Flickr group.

And if you missed the LOPSA booth this year, we have a photo of
Jesse Trucks and Danielle Gentile from Association Headquarters
holding down the fort and handing out puppies and unicorns to
anyone stopping by ... ok. Maybe it was just big smiles. Guess
you'll have to check it out next year to be sure!
