I've been working on this very debate myself this morning.
Unfortunately, email is much easier to get people to do for this
type of thing.

Once we get the Mailman <-> Drupal forums gateway working, we should
seriously consider using a forum topic connected to a separate
mailing list for the book of the month discussions.
