I guess I wasn't clear . . . I'm thinking specifically of out-of-town
speakers who don't have reason to come to town except to speak at our
meeting. People who we really want to hear, and if money were available
we would pay to have them come speak. In our case the speaker we were
trying to get was Avi Rubin. (For those of you who don't know him, Avi
is on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) and is
considered one of the world's leading authorities on electronic voting.)
Yes, there are usually ways to "avoid" the expenses, but sometimes there
aren't and when it's for a really good speaker or someone who can talk
about a very important topic, well, it would be nice if there were money
for that.
