We've been using drupal and its event module for our LUG for a while now.
(maybe a year and some months...) It's not perfect, but it's adequate.
The two main features missing are automatically putting the details of the
next two or three events on the home page and automatically emailing when
events are a certain distance in the future. Also nice for most groups
would be recurring events, so there's an infinite series into the future of
"third thursdays" with some of them edited to include information about the
topic that's been chosen. Tries to order things by date created on the
front page, which is totally wrong.
Still, less work than manually editing HTML, for sure. Somebody has to
remember to go de-promote one node and promote another one the day after a
meeting, and somebody sends an email to our announce list on 2 different
dates (usually one email 2 to 4 weeks before the meeting and a second a day
or two before). And really, anybody on the board or anybody we appoint can
do either task; no need for shell access and most of the steps consist of
"click 'read more', click edit, click the 'promote to front page' checkbox,
click save".
I'd considered trying to make a modified event module more customized for
user groups, but suffered from a tuit shortage and a dislike of trying to
program in PHP.
