[LOPSA-US-AZ] Application load balancing

Does anybody have any experince using a software based load balancer?
The reason I ask is we are currently evaluating a couple hardware based
solutions such as F5's Big-Ip product and I was wondering if there is an
open source equivlent out there that some is using. I have started
looking into Balance and BalanceNG, but I haven't really found to much
yet.
